Austin health inspections, explained

How does Austin grade restaurants?

Austin scores restaurants out of 100, and higher is better. Inspectors start at 100 and deduct for each violation, weighted by how likely it is to make someone sick. Under Texas rules a score below 70 is failing and brings a re-inspection. Austin Public Health publishes the scores but not the itemized violations behind them, so this page can tell you exactly how a kitchen scored and when — but not what specifically was written up. Cooked reads 90 and above as clean, 70 to 89 as mid, and below 70 as cooked.

How many Austin restaurants have a clean rating?

Of the 6,609 Austin restaurants Cooked tracks, 4,311 are currently rated clean, 2,277 are mid, and 14 are cooked — about 65% of rated spots come back clean.

Where does this Austin inspection data come from?

Directly from Austin Public Health, published as open data through Austin Open Data. Cooked preserves the source result and adds its own clean, mid or cooked comparison. These labels and list rankings are Cooked’s interpretation, not extra findings from the authority.

How often are Austin restaurants inspected?

That varies by risk and by city policy, and a restaurant can be re-inspected sooner after a bad result. The most recent inspection in Cooked's Austin data is dated August 18, 2026.
