Boston
Boston health inspections, explained
How does Boston grade restaurants?
Boston reports inspections as a pass or a fail, with no score and no letter. What separates a bad fail from a trivial one is the violation severity ladder: a single star is a minor issue, two stars is more serious, and three stars marks a critical foodborne-illness risk factor — temperature abuse, bad handwashing, cross-contamination. A restaurant can fail on paperwork alone, which is not the same as failing on food safety. Cooked splits Boston fails accordingly: a fail with a three-star violation reads cooked, a fail on minor items only reads mid.
How many Boston restaurants have a clean rating?
Of the 10,956 Boston restaurants Cooked tracks, 8,958 are currently rated clean, 724 are mid, and 636 are cooked — about 87% of rated spots come back clean.
Where does this Boston inspection data come from?
Directly from Boston Inspectional Services, Health Division, published as open data through Analyze Boston. Cooked preserves the source result and adds its own clean, mid or cooked comparison. These labels and list rankings are Cooked’s interpretation, not extra findings from the authority.
How often are Boston restaurants inspected?
That varies by risk and by city policy, and a restaurant can be re-inspected sooner after a bad result. The most recent inspection in Cooked's Boston data is dated September 2, 2026.
